i made this a while ago. something i built for a fund-raiser. it was auctioned off to help pay for a friends medical bills. i had only made something like this once before and that was in highschool so i really enjoyed putting this together with all the new experience i've gotten since then. the camera wasn't great so sorry for the crappy pictures. i'm posting pictures of the piece pre painting (which were taken with a better camera) here: [link]
took me about two days. it's made primarily out of wood dowels, balsa wood, and popsicle sticks. i used pre-shaped craft wood for the more difficult shapes like the wooden beads and spools i used to make the finger joints. used an exacto knife for most of the carving i had to do, and my dremel for all the hard wood parts. the wires are just wires, and the whole thing is stuck together with a glue gun. the only other thing that isn't wood is the ball joint at the wrist. it's a ping pong ball.
painted with rustoleum gold leaf, which is where i came up with the title. i think most of you know who midas was. i did my best to create a hand that looked fully functional, so for every possible movement a hand can make, there is a dedicated piston for that movement. on average about six per finger. it was very tedious work cutting every piece to the exact right length, but totally worth it in the end. i hope you all like it.
Well worth the effort, I'd say. At least in these photos it's got a very convincing metallic look, and man am I ever a sucker for all those tiny, painstaking details.
haha, me too. it's why i spent so long on it. really REALLY fun to build though. i'll probably do a few more because the process is so enticing. hardest part is nailing down proportions. i should make a list of measurements so i can do it faster next time, or make a whole bunch and sell em' at a craft show or something. next one's gonna be stained.
Wow! What a fabulous piece of work and I really like the unpainted version too. Hats off to you! And what a lovely thing for you to do. I hope your friend is okay?
they're fine. more than fine now actually. it was funny cause a week after the fund-raiser i got badly hurt too, and i was like, "where's my fund-raiser?" but alas. no fund-raiser for me. and no hospital visit either x-x. i just walked it off. ha.
oh, and thanks for the awesome comment! ^_^ glad you liked it!
Very nice piece. There is no doubt that it took A WHOLE LOT OF WORK and the effort of shows very nicely. You sound very proud of it and you should be because it truly is a work of art
thanks for the epic comment, and sorry for the delayed reply. i'm happy you liked it. i want to make more of them but the first one was such a pain that i kind of want to wait lest i get thoroughly frustrated with it. ha
